ELMHURST — Three suspects believed to have been involved with overnight armed robberies were arrested after a single-vehicle accident near North Avenue and Willow Road in Elmhurst.

According to a release from the Elmhurst Police Department, officers responded to a single vehicle traffic crash around 1:30 a.m. near North Avenue and Willow Road in Elmhurst. Police had previously identified a vehicle matching the description of one used by suspected armed robbers in Sycamore.

When police arrived, three individuals fled the vehicle on foot. Police apprehended two of the three individuals, and a firearm was recovered from the vehicle. Detectives from Sycamore helped to confirm the two could be held in connection with an armed robbery that occurred Monday night at a 7-Eleven in Sycamore, which resulted in an employee sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

The third, described as in his mid-20s with a medium build, wearing dark shorts and a dark shirt with short hair, had previously been considered armed and dangerous.

At 8:05 a.m., the third suspect was arrested by Elmhurst police. The suspect was found hiding under an outdoor deck in the 100 block of East Lake Frontage Rd. in Elmhurst after police responded to a call for a suspicious person. According to a news release from the Elmhurst Police Department, no additional suspects are being pursued.

Sycamore Police Deputy Chief Jim Winters said the first two in custody were connected to an armed robbery that took place around 11:20 p.m. Monday night at the 7-Eleven at 404 W. State St. in Sycamore. According to a news release from the Sycamore Police Department, two suspects entered the store with a firearm. A struggle ensued with the 45-year-old male clerk, and the clerk was shot twice in the lower body.

Winters said the clerk remained stable, and the injuries appeared to be non-life threatening. The clerk was transported to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

According to the release, the suspects then fled the scene in a white small to mid-sized vehicle.

Sycamore police conducted an on-scene investigation after the robbery and issued a radio broadcast to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Another armed robbery occurred at a gas station at North Avenue and Gary Avenue in Carol Stream around 12:10 a.m., and the same individuals are believed to be involved, police say.

Police did not release the individuals' identities who have been arrested, citing an ongoing investigation. They are being held by the Sycamore Police Department, and Winters said they are not from DeKalb County.

Two were described in a previous release as black males with short hair, who appeared to be in their 20s. One was wearing a shirt that resembled an American flag and the other wore a white T-shirt. The suspect who previously was wearing the white shirt is believed to have left the store with a black 7-Eleven shirt, which was originally worn by the clerk.

Sycamore, Carol Stream and Elmhurst police continue to investigate the incidents, along with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office. Winters said once all three suspects are in custody, the Dekalb County State's Attorney's Office will file charges.
