High school sports roundup: Batavia boys track dominant in Kane County meet victory

Four from St. Charles head to state badminton; Geneva keeps slugging

ST. CHARLES – Utter dominance.

It is the phrase that most aptly describes the performance of Batavia’s boys track and field team at the Kane County meet at St. Charles East on May 5.

The Bulldogs crowned 10 champions and had an additional nine top-three finishes as they scored 198 points to win the team title over St. Charles North (82.5).

Jay Hunt was a champion in the 100-meter dash (10.95 seconds) as well as the 200 (22.19), and he anchored Jordan Birkhaug, Michael Stanley and Jeremiah Evers on the winning 4x100 relay (42.92).

Stanley won in the 400 dash (49.81), while Sam Conger (15.04 in the 110 hurdles) and Will Akers (39.69 in the 300 hurdles) made it a Batavia sweep in the hurdles races.

Birkhaug, Reggie Phillips, Thomas Stuttle and Julian Davis ran to the 4x200 title in 3:23.31, while Sean Adams, Shane Knanishu, Joseph Knanishu and Adam Kennedy won the 4x800 in 8:06.66.

Akers added a field event title in the long jump (22 feet, 5 inches), and Peter Rudelich (6-5) was the first part of a 1-2 finish in the high jump with Hunt (6-3).

Elijah Green (51-8.75 in the shot put and 147-5 in the discus), Christopher Levario (9:49.79 in the 3,200 run), Evers (11.24 in the 100 dash) and the 4x400 team of Phillips, Stanley, Josh Young and Akers (3:23.31) placed second. Evers (50.40 in the 400), Young (15.55 in the 110 hurdles) and Adam Kennedy (1:57.39 in the 800) took third.

BADMINTON

Geneva

Alissa Ross and Emily Franklin both won first-round singles matches at the Palatine sectional May 4, but they fell in quarterfinal matches and couldn’t navigate the backdraw as they came up short of making it to state.

Brooke Blaszynski and Helena Corda won their first match in doubles action, but also missed out on a state berth.

St. Charles East

Emma Hardy didn’t drop a game on her way to the singles title and a state berth at the Hoffman Estates sectional tournament May 4.

Megan Spencer finished fourth in singles to also make her way to state, and East was third as a team with 9.5 points.

The state tourney takes place May 12 and 13 at Eastern Illinois University.

St. Charles North

Juniors Emma Helsel and Audrey Treadwell won a three-set match in a semifinal to make it to the doubles championship match at the Lake Park sectional tournament May 4.

The duo finished second to book a state berth, and North was fourth in the team standings (seven points).

SOFTBALL

Geneva

Katelyn Keller and Sam Keller both doubled and drove in two runs and Alissa Dierks added two RBIs as the Vikings withstood South Elgin’s two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-3 win May 8. Emily Viebrock gave up one earned run for the pitching win.

Katelyn Keller and Alyssa Kramer both homered twice and Sam Keller and Kaitlyn Plocinski also homered in an 18-0 win against Rosary on May 6. Plocinski and Kramer both had four RBIs.

Rosary

Xandria Olson scored twice and Krystal Cortes, Chloe Saltijeral, Maura VanBogaert and Natalya Flowers each had an RBI in a 4-0 win against Naperville North on May 5.

Abby Young scattered four hits over seven inning to earn the pitching win.

GIRLS SOCCER

Burlington Central

Kyrsten Pellikan scored twice, Jordan King had a goal and two assists, and McKenzie Freeman, Erin Rafferty and Megan Majewski each had a goal and assist in the Rockets’ 7-0 win against Woodstock North on May 6.

Zoey Kollhoff scored once, Taylor Abbott had an assist, and Abbi Ciganek made two saves as BC moved to 18-2-2 overall.

Geneva

Molly McGavin (from Alicia White) and Jenna Dominguez (from Jenni Santacaterina) scored about 14 minutes apart in the second half to lift the Vikings to a 2-0 win against Elgin on May 4 on senior night.

Emma Harkleroad made one save in 70 minutes and Katie Montgomery played the final 10 minutes to share the clean sheet as Geneva improved to 16-1-1 on the season.

BASEBALL

Batavia

Luke Golson tossed a gem, striking out nine and holding Waubonsie Valley to just three hits and a walk in the Bulldogs’ 1-0 road win May 6. Drew Mueller scored the unearned run.

Quinn O’Brien drove in two and Brent Norkus added an RBI, but Batavia fell 5-3 against Sycamore on May 8 to slip to 6-13 on the season.

Geneva

After falling 14-5 in an Upstate Eight River game against St. Charles North, the Vikings rebounded with a 5-4 win against West Aurora in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover May 6.

Dylan Baer went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, Jack Olson and Noah Davison each had a run and RBI, and Tyler Venditti added an RBI for the Vikings as they improved to 16-9 on the season.

Marmion

After falling 8-1 against Brother Rice on May 6, the Cadets suffered a 5-3 loss in eight innings against the Crusaders on May 8.

Brother Rice scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3 and scored two more times in the eighth for the win. Bobby Pierce drove in two runs, Dillon Dilorio added a run and an RBI, and Brandon McPherson and Elias Flowers each scored once.

St. Charles North

On the heels of a 10-0, five-inning win against East Aurora on May 6, the North Stars topped Waubonsie Valley 13-3 May 8.

Anthony Delisi was 2 for 3 with a double, home run, walk, four RBIs and three runs to lead the way against Waubonsie Valley. Zach Mettetal doubled and tripled and drove in four, and Raph Rhoades had two RBIs and three runs.

Bennett Christiansen and Christian Erickson combined to throw a no-hitter against East Aurora.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Burlington Central

Enrique Martinez, Adam Kries, Tate Henrickson and Josh Teets finished third in the 4x800-meter relay (8:14.72) for the Rockets’ best finish at the Kane County meet at St. Charles East on May 5.

Kries (52.42 in the 400 dash) and Aakansh Sharma (15.81 in the 110 hurdles) added fifth-place finishes.

Geneva

Distance races proved to be the best for the Vikings at the Kane County meet May 5.

Brian Kuehl (1:54.09) and Tyler Dau (1:55.41) finished 1-2 in the 800-meter run, while Josh Rodgers won the 3,200 run (9:41.34) and teammate Ryan Kredell finished third (9:52.27).

The 4x400 relay team of Kuehl, Dau, Ben Ramage and Evan Rutledge (3:27.60) and the 4x800 group of Cole Montgomery, Jordan Evans, Scott Creger and David Creger (8:18.33) both finished fourth.

Marmion

Michael Ronzone was just edged at the finish line as he took second in the 1,600-meter run (4:19.12) at the Kane County meet May 5.

Charlie Zimmer was fourth in the 1,600 run (4:24.51) while Zach Urwiler was third in both the 100 dash (11.26) and 200 dash (22.87).

St. Charles East

James Cooper was part of two of East’s best finishes at the Kane County meet it hosted May 5.

Cooper led teammates JB Sandlund, Jake Schweizer and Charlie Wade in capping the meet with a win in the 4x400-meter relay (3:22.07), and Cooper earlier placed second in the 300 hurdles (40.36).

John Carroll had a runner-up showing in the triple jump (44 feet, 8.50 inches), and Sandlund was fourth in the 800 run (1:57.43).

St. Charles North

Numerous runner-up showings led the North Stars to second place as a team at the Kane County meet May 5.

On the track, Luke Sutherland (49.84 in the 400-meter dash) and the 4x200 relay of Luke Zanis, Peter Willis, Jacob Aalfs and Colton Tisdall (1:31.24) were second.

Willis tied for second in the high jump (6 feet, 3 inches), and Cam Wright was second in pole vault (14-7) for the North Stars.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Batavia

Samantha Healy (38 feet in shot put) and the 4x200-meter relay (1:46.37) were conference champions for the Bulldogs at the Upstate Eight Conference meet May 4 at Elgin.

Sam Baumann (104 feet in discus), the 4x800 relay (9:57.09) and Hannah Schlaman (25.72 in the 200 dash) were runners-up as Batavia tied with Glenbard East for second as a team with 68 points. West Aurora won with 122 points.

Geneva

The Vikings’ Sophia McDonnell (11:05.17 in the 3,200-meter run) and Georgia Reed (45.63 in the 300 hurdles) won titles at the Upstate Eight Conference meet May 4.

Susan D’Onofrio was second in triple jump (35 feet, 10.75 inches), and Hanna Borodin (33-9 in shot put), the 4x200 relay (1:49.12) and the 4x400 relay (4:10.07) finished third as Geneva was fifth as a team.

Rosary

Danielle Goering in the 200-meter dash (26.08 seconds), Brooke Delahanty in the 400 dash (1:01.52), Claire Hengesbaugh in the 1,600 run (5:26.02) and the 4x200 relay (1:48.27) were champions for the Royals at the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Red Division meet May 6 at Loyola.

Mary Kate Bakala (16 feet, 8.75 inches in long jump) and the 4x400 relay (4:12.62) placed second as Rosary (111.8 points) was third behind St. Ignatius (121) and Loyola (119.3).

St. Charles East

Kennedy Gift cleared 11 feet, 3 inches in pole vault and Anna Arrick clocked a 5:16.27 in the 1,600-meter run to win titles at the Upstate Eight Conference meet May 4.

Emma Battin (5:18.37 in the 1,600), Casey McNichols (47.70 in the 300 hurdles) and the 4x800 relay (10:02.01) placed third as East finished fourth as a team.

St. Charles North

Kayla Mikottis won discus with a mark of 104 feet, 10 inches, and Audrey Ernst was second in both the 1,600-meter run (5:16.89) and the 3,200 run (11:08.42) at the Upstate Eight Conference meet May 4.

Natalie Galvan (2:21.10 in the 800) and Autumn Horlbeck (9-6 in pole vault) both took third as North was sixth as team.
