High school sports roundup: IC Catholic, Glenbard East send bowlers to sectional tournament

ELMHURST – IC Catholic sophomore CJ Slowinski bowled a 1,123 series at IC’s regional tournament Jan. 14 to book a spot at the Glenbard East sectional Jan. 21.

Slowinski finished seventh among the 10 bowlers who advanced to the sectional as individuals.

The Knights compiled a 4,511 team score and finished 10th in the regional.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Glenbard East

It took longer than expected, but the Rams cracked the win column Jan. 16 with a 63-50 win against Huntley in the finale at Wheaton Warrenville South’s MLK tournament.

Freshman point guard Alijah Nelson knocked down six 3-pointers and finished with 23 points against Huntley as East improved to 1-17.

The Rams travel to East Aurora (7 p.m. Jan. 20) and host local rival Willowbrook (7:15 p.m. Jan. 21) as part of the daylong When Sides Collide shootout at East.

IC Catholic

The Knights knocked off Walther Christian 65-25 on Jan. 13, but fell 61-52 on the road at St. Edward the next day.

IC (11-6) hosts Timothy Christian in a Metro Suburban Conference crossover game at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20.

BOYS BOWLING

Glenbard East

Two pins were all that separated the Rams (fifth, 5,489 total) from Argo and a team sectional berth at the IC Catholic regional Jan. 14.

The Rams had three individuals move on to the sectional they will host Jan. 21. Junior Preston Cox (1,164 series), senior Connor Grzenia (1,126) and sophomore Jake Jordan (1,108) advanced to the sectional at the Brunswick Zone in Glendale Heights.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

IC Catholic

Claire Gibler scored 15 points, but the Knights were outscored 31-17 in the second half of a 54-44 loss at St. Edward on Jan. 14. IC also was on the short end of a 40-34 game against Aurora Central Catholic on Jan. 17 as it fell to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in Metro Suburban Blue play.

Montini

The Broncos improved to 21-0 with a decisive 69-34 win against Marquette (Ind.) on Jan. 16 at the Subway Classic shootout at Willowbrook High School.

Kaylee Bambule scored a team-high 19 points while Aaliyah Patty added 16 points and 12 rebounds and Lindsey Jarosinski finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Timothy Christian

Despite 12 points and five steals from Jordyn Strube and eight points and three rebounds from Heidi Westra, the Trojans fell 51-36 against Chicago Christian on Jan. 17.

Timothy fended off Lisle’s comeback effort to notch a 48-45 win on Jan. 14. Ava Venema’s double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds set the tone for the Trojans. Olivia Schuringa had 13 points and nine rebounds against the Lions. Tyra Hopson finished with six points, three rebounds and three assists, Westra had six points, and Allison Zeilstra nailed five free throws down the stretch to help seal the win.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

York

Sydney Hill had the Dukes’ best finish at the Niles North invite on Jan. 14 as she placed fourth on uneven bars with a score of 8.6.

Megan Cronin tied for eighth on bars (8.35) and Hill tied for ninth on beam (8.25) as York placed fifth with a 95.325 total.
