DOWNERS GROVE – A local couple with years of fitness experience under their belt has opened up a new, diverse fitness business in their hometown.
SPENGA Downers Grove officially opened July 25 by residents Tom and Jane Powers. Spenga features a blend of cardio, strength and flexibility in its daily class offerings.
Tom said the two had originally owned several Cardinal Fitness locations – later converted to Charter Fitness – throughout the Chicago area and saw an opportunity to bring a unique experience to their community.
“We saw the trend the business was going,” he said. “This really is the complete workout. Everybody just does cardio, a lot of young guys just try to get strong, most people don’t stretch.”
The fitness studio, with locations nationwide but few in Illinois, features classes with 20 minutes of spin cycling, 20 minutes of strength conditioning and 20 minutes of yoga.
Tom said the downtown demographic of Downers Grove served as the perfect place to expand the Spenga brand into the area. Once more come into the area, members will have universal membership, he said.
“This is the type of model where you wouldn’t necessarily just belong to one,” he said. “I would say most of our members will have more than one home gym.”
