August is an important time for Sycamore’s Israel of God’s Church W.H.A.
This church, founded in 1887, is located in 13 cities in seven states. Its national headquarters are in Sycamore, and members host an annual conference every August that draws between 250 and 400 people over a six-day period.
Longtime church member Nathan Thomas will talk about the history of the Israel of God’s Church, at 248 North Ave., as part of the Sycamore History Museum’s Aug. 4 brown bag lunch program.
Thomas will explore the history of the church, which was formally organized in 1891 in St. Louis. Apostle George W. Flowers was the first visible leader.
He came to Sycamore in 1909 and lived there until his death in 1923. He is featured in the Sycamore History Museum’s current exhibit, “Faces of Sycamore.” Thomas also will discuss how the church has grown over the years.
Brown bag lunches are at noon on the first Thursday of the month at the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main St. The program is free and open to the public; donations are welcome. Coffee and cookies are provided.
