DeKalb County Community Gardens will host an open house at the newly opened Walnut Grove Vocational Farm from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
The Walnut Grove Vocational Farm, located at 33600 Pearl St. in Kirkland, is an agricultural and horticultural training program for young people with disabilities. The farm offers experiential opportunities for individuals with special needs between the ages of 15 and 25. The farm works with participants to set up an individualized training so they can gain meaningful employment, and be fully engaged in the wider community.
Participants have an opportunity to work with small animals, raise chickens, work in the 3,000-square-foot greenhouse, work in more than an acre of garden, assist with the prairie restoration project, run the produce stand, or work in the orchard.
The open house is an opportunity to buy spring bedding plants. There will be flowers, vegetables, herbs and hanging baskets available for purchase.
