It was a record-breaking day for Lemont’s boys swimming team Feb. 6.
Competing at the South Suburban Conference meet, three school records fell as Lemont placed second with 207 points.
Senior Andy Wood won the 200-yard individual medley with a school-record time of 2:07.97.
Wood was joined by Andres De La Vega, Greg Zimkus and Owen Ganzer on the winning 400 freestyle relay team that set a record with a mark of 3:30.88.
Wood was second in the 100 breaststroke, setting a third school record with a time of 1:05.93.
Ganzer won a pair of races, taking first in the 50 freestyle (22.70) and the 100 backstroke (58.71).
Zimkus finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:58.24) and was third in the 100 freestyle (54.23).
De La Vega’s time of 5:33.11 was good for second in the 500 freestyle.
The 200 medley relay team of Isaiah Arabe, Wood, Peter Sniezko and Ray Scribano finished third in 1:56.23, and the 200 freestyle relay quartet of Ganzer, Arabe, Scribano and Zimkus also was third (1:39.45).
The next meet for Lemont is the Lyons Township sectional Feb. 20.
Cheerleading
It was another successful trip to the state finals for Lemont’s cheerleading team.
In the Indians’ 11th trip to state, they earned their 10th straight trophy. Lemont placed second in the medium team division with a score of 90.13 on Feb. 6. It was the fourth state runner-up finish for Lemont, which has won four state titles since 2009.
Lemont and Oak Forest flip-flopped their standings in the finals. Lemont was first after the prelims Feb. 5 with a 90.93 score, while Oak Forest went from 90.43 in the prelims to 92.13 in the finals.
Members of Lemont’s team included seniors Taylor Biggs, Erin Cliff, Paige Murphy, Katelyn Papierski, Paola Prado, Jaclyn Rachanski, Taylor Sambucci and Taryn Tate; juniors Gianna Bogo, Claudia DeSantis, Alyssa Gorski, Caitlyn Henry, Olivia LaDuke, Kassandra Mlady, Morgan Pukula and Gianna Sabanov; and sophomores Gia Baldassano, Katie Boyle, Andrew Gonzalez and Stephanie Pinczes.
The team was coached by Dave Erlenbaugh.
Boys basketball
PJ Pipes scored 28 points while Nick Wisz had 15 points and six rebounds in Lemont’s 60-50 win against Oak Forest on Feb. 4.
With the win, the Indians improved to 13-9 overall and 6-3 in the South Suburban Conference before a road trip to Bremen for a 6:30 p.m. game Feb. 12.
Wrestling
Lemont saw five wrestlers finish on top of the awards stand at the Class 2A Hinsdale South regional Feb. 6. The five booked berths to the Lemont sectional Feb. 12 and 13.
Frankie Montalto had two pins and an 8-4 win in the final to claim the title at 138 pounds.
Egan Berta won an 11-3 major decision for the 145 title, and Jake Kirkman won 11-1 in the final at 152. Damyen Gothard had a 16-1 technical fall in the 160 semis and took the title with an 11-2 major decision. John Polk had pins in the semis and final for the crown at 170.
Pat Flynn was the runner-up at 285, and Jack Leffler won his third-place match at 106 to also advance to the sectional.
Girls bowling
Breanna Malak had a pinfall of 1,127 at the Sandburg regional Feb. 6 to earn an individual berth to the Joliet West sectional Feb. 13.
As a team, Lemont finished 10th with a pinfall total of 4,928.
