Prep sports roundup: Riverside Brookfield, Fenwick boys basketball go toe-to-toe

The first half belonged to Riverside Brookfield’s boys basketball team.

The second half belonged to Fenwick’s Mike Smith.

The Bulldogs led 32-23 at the half against the highly regarded Friars on Jan. 23 at Glenbard East’s When Sides Collide shootout, but Smith scored 24 points in the second half to give Fenwick a 67-64 win.

Smith buried four 3-pointers and went 10-of-12 from the free-throw line in the second half and finished with a game-high 34 points.

While Fenwick (17-2) relied heavily on Smith, the Bulldogs (14-3) had scoring balance.

Daniko Jackson scored 17 points to lead RB, with Jalen Clanton (14), Skyler Nash (13) and Mark Smith (12) also reaching doubled figures.

Mike Ballard scored 15 points for Fenwick and Jacob Keller added 13.

RB will be tested by another elite team when it plays defending Class 3A state champion St. Joseph at the Batavia Night of Hoops shootout Jan. 30.

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. Joseph

Marquise Walker scored 14 points and Nick Rakocevic added 12 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Chargers in a 65-52 loss against Morgan Park on Jan. 23 at Hinsdale Central’s High School Hoops Showdown.

BOYS BOWLING

Lyons Township

Jack McGuinn had a pinfall of 1,391 to place fourth individually, and Otto Meccia placed eighth with a total of 1,325 at the Lake Park sectional Jan. 23. Those strong showings helped LT book a state berth with a third-place total of 6,128.

Colin Temple (1,313), Marco Garcia (1,136) and Garrett Ariana (963) also added to the team score for the Lions, who head to St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon for the state meet Jan. 29 and 30.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

Lyons Township

Sarah Halm won on vault (9.35) and bars (8.95) and Olivia Kalata took top honors on floor (9.2) as the Lions topped Hinsdale Central 136.6-136.0 in a dual meet Jan. 20.

WRESTLING

Lyons Township

Ezra Avery won twice by fall, including at the 1:15 mark of the title match, in his three matches at the Oak Park-River Forest invite Jan. 23 as he took home the 182-pound title.

Johnny Mologousis had two pins on his way to the 160 title match, and he placed second. Frank Walsh had a quick pin and major decision on his way to the 220 title bout, where he was the runner-up.

Zach Villarreal won 6-1 in the third- place match at 126 and Gabe Mata won 3-2 to take third at 285.

Elias Garcia (120), Jorge Rivera (152) and Anthony Vecchio (195) placed fourth.

Keith Schroeder took fifth at 132, winning 7-4 in his final tourney match. Mac Casella had three straight first-period pins to finish his tourney as he took fifth at 138.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs crowned four champions as they finished second as a team at the Metro Suburban Conference tournament Jan. 23.

Al’lon Carter won his two contested matches by fall to take top honors at 285 pounds.

Julian Blanco had a first-period pin and two technical falls to take the title at 145.

Chris Colvin won at 195, capping his title with a 7-1 decision, and Josh Contreras won 1-0 in the 120 title match.

Tommy Russell (103), Joey Giurini (113), Maxx Reeze (138) and Joey Swallow (152) were runners-up.

Ernetso Bobe (160) won his third- place match for RB, which scored 235.5 points to finish behind Fenton (243.5) in the team race.
