Prep sports roundup: Nazareth boys basketball looking to snap skid, Tommy Russell wins wrestling tourney

Looking to rebound from an 80-63 loss against St. Ignatius on Jan. 12, Nazareth’s boys basketball team fell 72-59 against East Suburban Catholic Conference foe St. Patrick on Jan. 15, then fell 77-63 against Ridgewood the following day.

The Roadrunners host DePaul Prep at 7 p.m. on Jan. 23 before hosting Providence on Jan. 26 for senior night.

WRESTLING

Riverside Brookfield

Tommy Russell bookended his tournament with pins as he brought home the 106-pound title at the Lincoln-Way East invite on Jan. 16.

Julian Blanco won his first three matches to reach the title bout at 138, where he placed second.

Ernesto Bobe made the 160 semifinals and placed fourth. Joey Swallow won four straight in the 152 consolation bracket and took fourth.

Josh Contreras (120) and Carsen Moreno (182) were both sixth.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Riverside Brookfield

Despite playing without leading scorer Samantha Bloom, the Bulldogs raced out to a 26-10 lead against Wheaton North on Jan. 16 in a game at the Subway Classic, but North battled back and handed RB a 63-52 loss.

Lyndsey Boyd scored 19 in the game, 17 coming in the first half.

GYMNASTICS

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs picked up a senior night win on Jan. 21, topping Fenton 128.7-113.05

Katie Polanski won on vault (8.9) and bars (7.55), Olivia Weimer won on floor (8.2), and Campbell Hays and Polanski shared the win on beam (8.15).

Lyons Township

Sarah Halm finished fifth on bars (9.2) for the Lions’ best finish at the Fremd invite Jan. 16. LT scored a 135.675 to take fifth as a team.

BOYS BOWLING

Lyons Township

Led by individual champ Jack McGuinn (1,351 series), the Lions took home the title at the Hinsdale South regional on Jan. 16.

LT finished with a total of 6,277 pins to finish comfortably ahead of Glenbard East (6,027).

Colin Temple (1,303), Garrett Ariana (1,259) and Otto Meccia (1,252) boasted some of the top scores, and Marco Garcia (920) and Thomas Brasse (192) also made solid contributions.

Next up for LT is the Lake Park sectional on Jan. 23 at the Brunswick Zone in Roselle.

St. Joseph

Keith Moore (1,168) and Joshua Pacheco (1,142) both had strong showings at the Hinsdale South regional on Jan. 16 to book their spots at the Lake Park sectional on Jan. 23.

As a team, the Chargers had a 4,717 total to place eighth overall.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fenwick

Mike Ballard had 18 points while Mike Smith and Jamal Nixon scored 13 points apiece in the Friars’ 58-35 win against Providence St. Mel on Jan. 15.
