Sycamore restaurant owner considers expanding Jamrah

SYCAMORE – Ammar Mahmood knew Middle Eastern food was gaining popularity, but it wasn’t until opening his family restaurant, Jamrah, that he fully understood Sycamore’s craving for kebabs and falafels.

Jamrah took over the space at 2672 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, which was previously occupied by Carmine’s Subs, Wraps and Salads in an outlot in front of Hy-Vee.

“I thought the town really needed a new selection and the food is really popular,” Mahmood said. “A lot of people know what hummus is. A lot of people know what falafel is. A lot of people have a pretty good idea of what a shawarma is. But we didn’t have that variety here.”

Jamrah’s menu includes: hummus, pita, shawarma, falafels, kebabs and baklava, ranging from $3 to $13 for individual items and platters.

Mahmood and his wife began kicking around the idea for a Middle Eastern restaurant after opening Tangier Hookah Lounge at 27 E. Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb. Upon opening last month, Jamrah seemed to be a hit with college kids and white-collar workers alike, Mahmood said. But business still hasn’t slowed down. In fact, customers want to know where else they can buy Mahmood’s cooking.

“The response has been very positive,” he said. “We’ve had people beg us to open up in the St. Charles, Geneva area. We’ve had people come in and ask us to consider Rockford as a next store. We’ve really been pleased with the business since we’ve opened.”

The good reviews have encouraged Mahmood and his family to consider expanding as a chain. Right now the owner is looking into opening his second Jamrah restaurant as well as incorporating catering and delivery services, he said.

“People love the food. I haven’t had one complaint yet. We’ve got that response from the first day,” Mahmood said. “I’m really very happy about that, too. We are planning on opening up a second location, hopefully, soon.”
