With the words “And I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free...”, singer Lee Greenwood voiced the thoughts of many, if not all, citizens of the United States of America. A single phrase in a popular song sums up the feelings of a grateful and proud nation. There are many songs, celebrations, and traditions that continue to show the pride of Americans, and in New Lenox, IL they celebrate with an annual fun, family-oriented festival, “Proud American Days”.
The festival’s origins began with a two-man band under a tent playing music with a keg of beer to share, and has blossomed into one of the largest and most popular festivals in the area. Over time, the addition of extra days, contests, activities, carnival rides and food options contributed to its growth and popularity.
Now hosted by the New Lenox Community Park District, this annual, four-day festival is always held the last weekend in July, Thursday through Sunday. Live entertainment features popular local bands, and carnival rides offer fun for all ages. Festival favorites such as the Annual Baby Contest, Military Tribute, Bean Bag Tournaments, Teen Battle of the Bands, and the Family Extravaganza are honored traditions that continue to enhance the spirit of the festival, and help to spotlight the Town of New Lenox as the Home of Proud Americans.
Activities such as a lip sync contest, a classic car show, a controlled burn beef cook-off, and “cooling off with Olaf and friends” add to the festival fun. Wristbands for unlimited carnival rides are available during certain times; please check the website for specific information, along with an event map and a list of bands performing (some require a cover charge).
