Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week: Downers Grove North's Emma Moravec

Track and field

Why Moravec was selected:

Moravec earned state meet berths in each of her three events at North's Class 3A sectional meet on May 14.

The sectional track meet could be considered the most important meet of the season for many athletes since the results of the sectional determine state meet berths. Emma Moravec survived the pressure situation of the sectional and made it to state in all three of her events: The open 800-meter run and as part of the 4x800 and 4x400 relays. Moravec, the Sears Appliance & Hardware Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Jason Rossi about her sectional meet, why North's 4x800 relay is so successful and how previous state meet experience will help her this season.

Rossi: What are your thoughts on your sectional meet?

Moravec: I was really excited with how the sectional meet went, qualifying in all my events, so I'm really excited to see how it goes [at state].

Rossi: It seems like North's 4x800 relay has been a good relay for a long time. What makes it so successful?

Moravec: Every year we have a few girls who come back and we get a couple new ones, but I don't know. We just work really hard. I think we have a lot of 800-meter talent, and it shows.

Rossi: Will it be easier to run at state having been there before?

Moravec: Yeah. I'm definitely going to build on my experience from last year. State was really crazy with the stands and all the fans.

Rossi: Do you have a song you want in your head if you need to run a bit faster?

Moravec: I don't have a particular song, but I always listen to music on the way to the meet just to calm down.
