OGLESBY — Ottawa Township High School, St. Bede Academy and Midland Township High School each won their respective team divisions at the Feb. 6 Illinois Valley Community College Academic Challenge Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) competition.
Ottawa won Division 1500 followed by LaSalle-Peru and Streator; St. Bede captured Division 700 followed by Hall and Mendota; and Midland took Division 300 followed by Putnam County and Marquette Academy. In all, 11 teams and 275 students participated.
First-place individuals in the big school division were Ottawa’s Zachary Boaz, mathematics, and Claire Schaibley, English; LaSalle-Peru’s Ross Baker, engineering graphics, Ryan Taylor, chemistry, Shana Puetz and Brett Kowalczyk, biology, Kage Kowalski, computer science, and Ulysses Marques-Valenzuela, physics; and Streator’s Blake Miller, mathematics.
Firsts in the mid-level division were St. Bede’s Felipe Takaesu, biology, Jingtao (Tina) Zhou, physics, and Shiyu (Emily) Yu, chemistry and mathematics; Hall’s Marco Uribe, computer science, and Lindsey Choate, English; and Seneca’s Ryan Murray, engineering graphics.
Small school firsts were Midland’s Austin Hopper, physics, and Kayelynn Guthman, mathematics; Putnam County’s Brian Schrowang, engineering graphics, William Faletti, chemistry, and Scott Urnikis, computer science; and Marquette’s Alexandra Kissel, biology.
