BERWYN – A woman and four police officers were injured in a fire at a Berwyn apartment building early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the U-shaped apartment building at 3252 Maple Avenue at 1:05 a.m. and found a first-story apartment in flames. The fire then spread to the second floor apartment above.

The tenant of the apartment, a 40-year-old Berwyn resident, was injured, according to Deputy Fire Chief Kris Coniglio.

Four Berwyn police officers who rescued the woman from the apartment were treated at an area hospital for smoke inhalation and released.

All other tenants of the 34-unit apartment building were evacuated into sub-zero temperatures without injuries.

"It was brutal, the worst time of the year," Coniglio said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
