Four Downers Grove stops for end-of-summer treats

DOWNERS GROVE – With summer quickly coming to an end, that taste for a cool treat may be short lived.

There's a limited number of warm, sunny days left in the forecast, so take advantage with these four places in Downers Grove you'll want to visit before the season is over.

Every Day's a Sundae

This locally-owned ice cream shop has called Downers Grove home since 1992, and has served its menu of more than 40 flavors in its current location, near the downtown Metra stop, for 10 years.

Co-owner Diane Urban said this summer's most popular treat is their new flavor, salted caramel, whether it's in a cone or a big scoop in a bowl. Diners can choose a smattering of toppings to top their choice, or opt for other items like smoothies.

The shop, 990 Warren Ave. is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 12 to 10 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, visit, www.icecreamdownersgrove.com.

Maxwell's Beef

The Chicago-style beef, hot dog and polish sausage stop at 63rd Street and Woodward Avenue compliments its entrees with a selection of Italian ice.

Owner John Gravalos said lemon is most popular, but his business also offers strawberry and blueberry.

Gravalos has been serving up Chicago street food at the location for about 10 years, he said.

The restaurant, 2003 63rd St., is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/maxwellsbeef.

Oberweis Dairy

The dependable regional chain still has its trademark milk in old-fashioned glass jugs, of course, in addition to thick milkshakes and premium ice cream for sale at its retail locations.

Regular customers can buy into the "Shake a month club." The club card comes preloaded for 12 monthly treats at a discount over the regular price.

Oberweis Dairy, 60 Ogden Ave., is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit www.oberweis.com.

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt

Menchie's is the newest addition to Downers Grove's frozen yogurt options, opening this spring on the south side of town.

The national chain has more than 400 locations, and is the fastest-growing fast casual restaurant in the country, according to its website.

The menu typically features a rotating cast of 12 flavors chosen from a selection of 70, including non-fat and low-fat options, in addition to sorbet. Customers can personalize their treat with a toppings bar that includes 32 options. Menchie's also has a chill bar with fruit.

The franchise, owned by siblings Soheela and Mike Malik, is located at 7339 Lemont Road. It's open from noon to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit www.menchies.com.
