STERLING – Lawrence Silvio Segneri was born April 15, 1946, at Home Hospital in Sterling, to Silvio and Helen (Parker) Segneri. He passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon.
He attended local Catholic schools and, in 1964, graduated from Newman High School. Larry received his teaching degree from DeKalb University, where he was president of the Young Democrats Club, and got very involved in politics during the Kennedy era. He spent his entire career teaching history and political science in Chicago schools. When he retired from teaching, he returned to his hometown of Sterling.
He was an avid reader, easily reading a book a week. He loved history and could recite the dates of any historical event.
He had a great affection for dogs, and rescued four from Happy Tails.
He is survived by a brother, Robert (Robin); a sister, Ann (Gary); three nieces, Gina (Brett) Froeliger, Josie (Aaron) Thompson, and Bailey (Stephen) Raham; and one nephew, Christopher Segneri. Also surviving are several great-nieces and great-nephews, including Hayden and Wil Froeliger, who shared Larry’s love of reading books. It brought him great joy to choose books for them and to have them shipped to their home in South Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Parker Segneri (2009) and Silvio Segneri (2014).
A private family service will be at a later date.
A memorial has been established for Serenity Hospice & Home.
