DWIGHT – Two of the Dwight Fire Protection District’s leaders have retired.
Chief Darrin Shull and Captain Rodney LeRoy’s retirements were effective May 1, according to a news release from the department.
On Tuesday, Paul Johnson was made the new fire chief. Johnson was serving as a captain for the department before his promotion.
Shull served for more than 33 years, 10 with Dwight. He joined the Dwight Fire Protection District and quickly made his presence known by earning the respect of all of the members. With his previous experience, he had served in leadership roles from training officer to chief and had no problem assisting Dwight to advance in a positive direction.
Over his years serving as chief, he had countless accomplishments and helped create a strong “brotherhood” in the department. He helped design a motto for the department: “We are our brothers keeper.” Next time you see a Dwight fire engine you will see the sticker Shull helped design with the saying. In retirement, he plans to spend more time with his family. Chief Shull is now a lifetime member of the Dwight Fire Protection District and will forever be a part of the brotherhood of the fire service.
Captain Rodney LeRoy served for more than 30 years, all with Dwight. LeRoy is one of few members who have reached this milestone with Dwight. He was always one of the most active members when it came to attendance on calls and training, according to the release. Throughout his time on the department, he served as a firefighter, lieutenant, captain and deputy fire chief. LeRoy also served on the department’s association. He selflessly served the community sacrificing countless hours away from home. Without blinking an eye, he would come running when the public needed him. Rodney also is a lifetime member of the Dwight district and will forever be a part of the brotherhood of the fire service.
Chief Johnson is now running the department and hosts an extensive background in the fire and EMS service. He resides in Dwight with his wife and three children. He is employed by the Downers Grove Fire Department and holds the rank of Lieutenant and Hazardous Materials Team Coordinator there. He is a certified Illinois Fire Officer 2, Instructor III, Training Program Manager and Incident Safety Officer. Chief Johnson also has been trained as a FEMA National Incident Management System Type 3 Incident Commander, according to the release.
