WALNUT – Dorothy B. Martin, 95, formerly of Sheffield, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Walnut Manor.
Dorothy was born June 29, 1918, in Neponset, the daughter of James and Florence (Stone) Harrison. She was a 1936 graduate of Neponset High School. She graduated in 1939 as a registered nurse from Public Hospital School of Nursing in Kewanee. She married Arthur C. Martin on May 27, 1939, in Burlington, Iowa. He died Oct. 20, 2011.
She worked as private duty nurse for for several years. She then was employed as office nurse for Dr. C.M. Berfield from 1956 to 1978, when she retired. She was a member of Royal Neighbors of America since 1935. She also was an American Red Cross volunteer. She was a former member of the Friends of the Library and the Eastern Star in Sheffield. She enjoyed needlework, crafts, bridge and dancing.
Surviving are one daughter, Judy Zager of Sterling; one grandson, Dennis (Ellen) DeRycke of Annawan; and one sister, Mary Leitner of Peoria.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Robert Martin; and a sister in infancy.
Cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no visitation. Private graveside services will be at a later date at Sheffield Cemetery. Grant-Johnson Funeral Home in Princeton is handling arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Sheffield Public Library, Sheffield United Church of Christ, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
