Rauner wins primary, will face Quinn in general election

CHICAGO (AP) – Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner won the GOP primary Tuesday in his bid for Illinois governor, as voters embraced a first campaign by the multimillionaire who flooded the airwaves with vows to run the Democratic stronghold like a business and curb the influence of government unions.

With Republicans eyeing what they view as their best shot in years to win the top job in President Barack Obama's home state, Rauner defeated three longtime state lawmakers – including the current state treasurer. He advances to a November matchup with Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, who easily won his nomination for a second full term.

Illinois Republicans pick Oberweis for Senate race

CHICAGO (AP) – A state legislator and dairy magnate has defeated a suburban Chicago businessman in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Illinois. State Sen. Jim Oberweis' victory Tuesday over Doug Truax sends him on to a November matchup with Democrat Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate. Oberweis is from the western Chicago suburb of Sugar Grove. He was elected to the Illinois Senate in 2012 and had made previous unsuccessful runs for U.S. Senate and governor. He has been criticized for some political ads, including one before a previous election in which he said the number of immigrants entering the U.S. illegally each week could fill Soldier Field. Truax has never held political office but had support from former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Quinn wins gubernatorial primary

In what is likely to be the least surprising result in today's primary elections, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has won the Democratic nomination in his bid for a second full term in office, The Associated Press reports. The Chicago Democrat topped a lesser-known challenger, activist Tio Hardiman.
