STERLING – Joan Long Treacy, 91, of Sterling, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at her home.
Joan was born Feb. 28, 1922, in Harmon, to Herbert J. and Theresa (Forster) Long. She married John F. Treacy on Jan. 29, 1944. He preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1973. She married Warren P. Wahl on June 6, 1975. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1981.
Joan attended St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind. Joan served as a Navy corpsman in World War II. She then went on to get a registered nursing degree at Sauk Valley College. There, she established the Warren P. Wahl-Joan L. Treacy nursing scholarship, which has educated nursing students since 1982. Joan was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Jo “Jodi” (Richard) Hammett of Amelia Island, Fla., Jill (Gary) Schueler of Sterling, and Joy Treacy of Overland Park, Kan.; one son, James (Jinny) Treacy of Sterling; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands; and one son, John Treacy.
Visitation will be from 9 to 9:55 a.m. Monday and Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Bruce Ludeke officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sterling. McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Warren P. Wahl-Joan L. Treacy Nursing Scholarship Fund.
