Cary dentist gives back as a Big Sister

0

CARY – Cary Dental Associates dentist Dr. Sarah Brewer is making a difference with Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County.

Brewer and her husband, Jeff, were looking for a way to donate or volunteer in the community and they both have a passion for helping children. They joined BBBS in September 2011.

“Volunteering with BBBS was a perfect fit because it allows us to form close relationships with our Littles and focus on really making a difference in their lives,” Brewer said.

Through McHenry County’s BBBS, Brewer has been able to mentor her Little – a young girl Brewer describes as outgoing, creative, athletic and highly intelligent. Some of their favorite activities to do together include doing puzzles, watching movies, playing games, bowling and going to the movies.

“She is so creative,” Brewer said. “It always amazes me that she can make some sort of creative project or game out of everything.  She is also very outgoing and easy to talk to so we often just go to dinner and she tells me about school and her friends.  I was much more shy as a child so I really enjoy seeing how she opens up and continues to share with me as our relationship gets stronger.”

Although Brewer spends a lot of time working on patients in the chair, she generally gets to spend a few hours per week with her Little – which is time she very much enjoys.

And she's not the only one giving back to the community at Cary Dental. Dr. Thomas Skleba also gives back through programs like the Give Back a Smile Foundation for victims of domestic violence, Donated Dental Services and the Mission of Mercy to provide care for those in need.
