When Georgetown girls volleyball coach Arlisa Williams was recruiting Tory Rezin out of high school, she knew that the former Morris Redskin had talent.
She still couldn't predict what Rezin ended up accomplishing at Georgetown.
Rezin stepped on Georgetown's campus and became the Hoyas' starting libero her freshman year. As a sophomore, Rezin broke the single-season record for digs with 475.
On Friday, Oct. 28, Rezin added to Georgetown's record book, breaking the career digs record at the school. It was a record that had stood since 1991, when Simone Kollman ended her collegiate career with 1,575 digs.
"I knew Tory was going to be a very talented player throughout the recruiting process," Williams said. "When she came here, we knew she was going to do some good things. I knew she was going to be good, I just didn't know how good.
"[The record]'s been in place since 1991. We've had great teams come through here since then. For her to do that we're really excited for her."
Rezin now has 1,590 career digs. She's also second on the team with 93 assists. The Hoyas have three matches left, and still have a shot at both the Big East and NCAA Tournaments
Rezin could add more than a few digs to her already impressive total.
"It's a great feeling," Rezin said of the record. "I knew kind of at the beginning of the year that I needed so many digs to break it. It's just a big accomplishment. I'm glad I could do it my senior year.
"Going into [college] I didn't think I could come in and break records that have been set for 20 years. I knew I would come in with a lot of playing time. I was happy about that. Over the years I've been really thankful, I wasn't really expecting it. I'm very happy with how it's all coming together."
Back when she was in high school, Rezin's goal was to play Division-I volleyball. Marquette and Florida State were other Division-I schools that were after Rezin on the recruiting trail. She spent two years as a walk-on, but is now on scholarship.
She liked the volleyball team at Georgetown, as well as the academics.
"I was recognized by a good amount of schools but I also wanted to go to a big-time school that had great academics," Rezin said. "When I came here I fell in love with the team and the campus. It's just unreal. It's very different than Morris. I figured, why not give it a try."
Williams saw a good defender when Rezin came to Georgetown. Now, Williams sees someone that can not only defend, but also pass and get the ball to the team's best hitters, something that's evidenced by Rezin's assist total.
"She would always make the special plays and play solid defense," Williams said. "What has evolved throughout the years is her ability to pass. What we have in Tory is a good passer and a good defender."
Rezin, the team's captain, has also seen her leadership improve in 2011.
"I feel like this year I've been more of a vocal leader," Rezin said. "I feel like overall, that's what I've really improved on, which has helped me skill-wise."
