Batavia Aldi store set to open in December

BATAVIA – By early December, a new Aldi store is set to open in the former Bassett Furniture store in Batavia.

Aldi is currently located at 2080 Main St. in Batavia, in the Windmill Creek shopping center. The 14,300-square-foot building has been at the location since January 1992, said Chris Stair, director of real estate for Aldi Inc.

Aldi is moving the store to the former Bassett Furniture store at 451 N. Randall Road in the WindPoint Center in order to increase its presence in the retail corridor, Stair said.

"It's better visibility and better access," Stair said. "It's moving us more into the heart of the retail corridor."

The plans involve adding 3,500 square feet to the back of the store, bringing it to 18,700 square feet, Stair said.

"We will be able to better display our existing produce line," he said.

The existing store will close the day before the new one opens, Stair said.

"We don't want to inconvenience the consumer by not having the store open," he said.

City officials said they are happy about the store's move. Assistant City Administrator Randy Recklaus said the move will be a boost to the WindPoint Center.

Stair said there are no plans to build any new Aldi stores in central Kane County at this time.

Aldi's 56-acre campus at 1200 N. Kirk Road in Batavia serves as the U.S. headquarters for Aldi Inc. Work is now moving forward on a six-story addition to the headquarters.
