Know Your Neighbors: Jim Grot

Jim Grot, 35, owns and operates Grot Imaging Studios, a commercial and portrait photography studio in Dixon. He lives in Dixon with his wife, Kara Grot, 35, and their three children, Noah, 8, Owen,  5, and Halli, 3. Jim is the son of Jim and Sharon Grot of Dixon, and has two brothers, Jon Grot, 41, of Boston, and Stephan Grot, 29, of Omaha, Neb., and two sisters, Kristin Rabideau, 39, of Freeport, and Jennifer Morrison, 38, of Columbus, Ohio.

On-the-job lesson: Always be honest.

Alma mater: I graduated in 1992 from Bishop McNamara High School in Kewanee. I got my bachelor's in photography from Bradley University, Peoria.

Philosophy: Be good, do good, and enjoy life.

Oughta be a law: There'd be no throwing cigarette butts out of car windows.

Hearts: Playing with my kids and watching "Family Guy" and "The Biggest Loser."

Darts: Texting.

Haunts: Home or a beach.

Heroes: My sons. They're both diabetic, and they just take it in stride.

First job: I worked at Dairy Queen in Kewanee when I was 16. It was awesome. My boss was a lot of fun.

First car: A 1980 Volkswagen Jetta when I was 16.

People say I look like: Tom Hanks.

Guilty pleasure: Pizza.

In the dictionary next to: Happy.

Trading places: I'd like to be an astronaut. I'd love to go into space.

Trading spaces: I'd like to go to Fiji. It seems like it'd be very quiet.

Best thing about Dixon: Strangers say hello.
