Joliet man indicted in connection with I-55 shooting that wounded motorist

Judge ordered man to have no contact with victim, Anthony’s restaurant

The new Will County Courthouse opened for the public in November of 2020.

A Joliet man has been indicted on charges alleging he shot and injured a man who was in a vehicle on Interstate 55.

A judge also ordered the alleged shooter to have no contact with the victim or his employer, Anthony’s Restaurant and Pub in Joliet, court records show.

A grand jury returned an indictment against Bryson L. Carter, 26, of the 200 block of Iowa Avenue on charges of aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The indictment alleged Carter fired a gun in the direction of a vehicle occupied by another man on Dec. 13 and caused him to suffer gunshot wounds to his left arm and back.

On Jan. 7, Carter was arraigned on the charges and he entered a plea of not guilty.

Will County State’s Attorney spokeswoman Carole Cheney confirmed Carter was charged over the same Dec. 13 shooting on I-55 that was investigated by the Illinois State Police.

State police said the victim of the shooting was a 37-year-old Minooka man who was traveling on I-55 at Black Road when another vehicle pulled alongside him and an occupant fired shots at him.

The man was hospitalized after the incident.

Illinois State Police Trooper Omoayena Williams declined to answer questions about the case because the investigation “remains open and ongoing.”

“In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, no information is available at this time,” Williams said.

Carter was first arrested Dec. 16. At a court hearing the next day, Judge Donald DeWilkins set his bond at $500,000 and ordered him to have no contact with the victim or Anthony’s Restaurant and Pub.

Cheney said the victim works at Anthony’s.

As of Friday, Carter remains in the Will County jail. He needs to post $50,000 for his release.
