A fugitive charged with sexual assault in New Lenox was apprehended by Will County sheriff’s deputies who found him in a residence with an assault style pistol, police said.
On Tuesday, deputies arrested Deshawn Matthews, 31, of Chicago on a charge of criminal sexual assault, according to a statement from the Will County Sheriff’s Office. The warrant issued for Matthews’ arrest that carried a $200,000 bond.
Matthews was taken into custody in Chicago.
Matthews was wanted by the New Lenox Police Department on the charge, police said. Prosecutors filed the charge on Nov. 22, court records show.
Matthews was accused of inviting the vicim of the sexual assault to his residence for a play date between for their children, police said.
While the children played together, the victim and Matthews went to a bedroom, where he locked the door and then committed the assault, police said.
Matthews has a criminal history that includes multiple convictions of weapon related offenses, police said.
“While conducting a protective sweep of the apartment, an AR-15 style pistol was located on a bed inside of the residence,” police said.

The pistol was found near a pair of jeans with Matthews’ identification card inside of a pocket and shoes belonging to him, police said.
The pistol had the serial number defaced and it was fully loaded, police said.
The deputies who apprehended Matthews were part of a unit that also included members of the United States Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Matthews was sent to the Chicago Police Department for booking and he will later be transferred to the Cook County jail, police said.
Charges against Matthews are under review by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
