Services set for Mt. Morris man killed in collision with semi

MT. MORRIS – Funeral services are set for Matthew W. Wissmach, 31, who died Tuesday when his SUV collided with a semi at the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and Winnebago Road in Winnebago.

The semi, driven by Paul L. Kaeser, 67, of Monona, Iowa, was westbound on U.S. 20, failed to stop at the traffic light and struck the front end of the northbound SUV, State Police said. As of Thursday, no charges against Kaeser were filed in Winnebago County Court.

Wissmach died at the scene.

According to his obituary, the Rockford native worked as a journeyman for Sheet Metal Union Local 219 for more than 5 years.

Among others, he is survived by his wife, Nicole, and their children Emily, Abigail, Theodore, and Meredith. His death came a day after their first wedding anniversary.

Visitation begins at 9 a.m. and his funeral at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 3910 N. Rockton Ave., Rockford. Masks will be required.
