‘Stop the bombardment’: Lee County approves resolution in support of Ukraine

Countywide fundraising campaign in the works

DIXON - The Lee County Board recently approved a resolution in support of Ukraine, and members are considering launching a fundraising campaign to provide aid to those in need.

Board members Jim Schielein and Chris Norberg presented the resolution with the goal of recognizing the continued Russian invasion into Ukraine and wanting to take a stand against it.

“On February 24, Vladimir Putin initiated an aggressive Act of War by invading the Sovereign Country of Ukraine; committed multiple Crimes Against Humanity; seized Ukrainian resources, targeted civilian populations including senior citizens, women and children; and has targeted for assassination the legitimately elected President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” according to the resolution.

The board “calls upon the Russian government to immediately stop the bombardment of Ukraine and withdraw its forces to pre-war lines and halt any operations against the democratically elected officials of the Ukrainian government.”

It further states that the board calls upon “United States Federal representatives to provide support, military and humanitarian, to the government and people of Ukraine in whatever manner they deem reasonable and appropriate” and “encourages our citizens to provide support to the people of Ukraine in any manner and amount possible.”

Schielein and Norberg are also looking to make a donation to a humanitarian organization providing aid to those in Ukraine.

Norberg said he thinks there are a lot of people out there who want to provide support, but they don’t know where to direct donations.

They’re suggesting the county partner with cities, organizations and businesses to raise funds for a yet to be determined humanitarian group and agree to match up to $25,000 in funds.

The two plan to iron out details next month with a fundraising campaign and matching funds.
