Area roundup: Newman Comets cruise past Kewanee on baseball diamond

Amboy softball picks up first win on Vaessen’s walk-off home run in 8th; Roby scores career-high 30 in Thunder victory

The Newman baseball team rolled past Kewanee 12-2 in five innings for a Three Rivers East win Monday afternoon in Sterling.

Brendan Tunink had two doubles and a triple, driving in four runs and scoring twice for the Comets, who scored three runs in the first, then answered Kewanee’s two-run fourth with seven more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kyle Wolfe had two hits and two RBIs while scoring three runs, and Nolan Britt also drove in a pair of runs for Newman. Mason Glaudel had two hits, two runs and an RBI, and Brennan Cook and Kory Mullen both had an RBI and a run scored. Jaesen Johns also drove in a run.

Wolfe went the distance on the mound, allowing two unearned runs and three hits, striking out five without a walk. He threw 45 of his 66 pitches for strikes.

Bureau Valley 13, Mendota 1, 5 inn.: The Storm won their Three Rivers East opener at home, improving to 5-0 on the season.

Carter Salisbury had two hits and three RBIs, and Justin Kopp had two hits, drove in a pair of runs, and scored three times. Sam Rouse and Adam Johnson combined to strike out nine for BV.

Somonauk 14, Amboy 2, 5 inn.: The Clippers scored both of their runs on bases-loaded walks in the third inning in a nonconference loss at home.

Jordan Gulley had Amboy’s lone hit. Andruw Jones took the loss on the mound.

Somonauk scored four runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead, then tacked on six more in the fourth for an 11-2 margin.

Softball

Amboy 8, Somonauk 7, 8 inn.: Tyrah Vaessen launched a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Clippers pulled out a nonconference win at home.

Vaessen also had two singles and a double in the game, and Kora Garren added a pair of singles for Amboy (1-2). Hannah Blanton struck out 17 and walked 14 while allowing five hits.

Somonauk led 4-3 heading into the seventh inning, and scored three runs to take a 7-3 lead. But the Clippers answered with four in the bottom of the inning to force extras.

Mendota 16, Bureau Valley 5, 5 inn.: The Storm fell to the Trojans in a Three Rivers East contest in Manlius.

Freeport 11, West Carroll 0, 5 inn.: The Thunder lost to the Pretzels in Thomson, as Freeport scored in every inning and Cam Plowman tossed a three-hit shutout.

Kendal Asay took the loss for West Carroll (0-3), allowing four earned runs and 13 hits in a complete game, striking out three and walking four.

Plowman struck out nine without a walk, and Macy Olson and Addison Gitz drove in two runs each for Freeport (2-2). Olson and Kailen Pro both had three hits, and Pro, Neela Vandeberg, Kyla Plowman and Diem Beach all added RBIs.

NBA

Roby hits new career high in Thunder win: Dixon native Isaiah Roby poured in 30 points – including a game-tying 3-pointer with 6.2 seconds left in regulation – to lead Oklahoma City past the Trail Blazers 134-131 in overtime on Monday night in Portland.

Roby made 11 of his 13 shots, including four of his five 3-point attempts, and also went 4-for-8 from the free-throw line to lead the Thunder in scoring. He also had eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks in 38 minutes, a new single-game high.

He hit two free throws with 10.1 seconds left to get OKC within 113-112, setting up his tying 3 four seconds later. In OT, he threw down a dunk with 1:03 left to give the Thunder a 126-122 lead, then made a layup with 50.3 seconds to play for a 128-124 lead.

Roby also started Saturday’s game against the Nuggets in Denver, a 113-107 OKC loss. He was 6-for-7 from the field for 12 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

The Thunder’s next game will be at home Wednesday against the Hawks at 7 p.m.
