CX-9 continues Mazda’s pursuit of inspired driving performance

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is a crossover unto itself. Touting Mazda’s extraordinary performance characteristics, this is a driver-centered performance vehicle that gushes with sporty style and above-average comfort cues.

What’s New

The changes to the CX-9 in 2021 include Mazda’s good news for Mazda’s Connect infotainment system with a 10.25-inch static display, new safety features in the form of a driver monitoring system, and automatic reverse braking, and new high-definition cameras for the surround-view monitor camera system.

The CX-9 is Mazda’s flagship vehicle and it is a deserving representative for the Japanese manufacturer. My Signature’s enhancements included a new wheel design, patterned aluminum cabin accents, quilted leather with contrast piping, and a restyled grille which, along with the new wheels, adds a real impact to the upscale SUV.

New Carbon Edition

The new Carbon Edition debuted this year and, unlike many models, this one is a middle entry in the lineup. This is an affordable ($41,080) crossover that delivers a custom look and feel with its Polymetal Gray paint, cranberry red leather upholstery, second-row captain’s chairs, and dark-finish 20-inch wheels. If you’re looking for a great ride that’s a stunner on the outside, this is an affordable option, to say the least.

The Lineup

Following the new CX-9 Carbon Edition are the Sport and Touring trim levels, each fitted with big 18-inch rims. Above it, the more luxurious CX-9 Grand Touring and Signature trims offer more standard features. Pricing ranges between $33,960 and $46,605. The CX-9 Signature I tested landed at a top-end $48,100.

Performance

I tested the Signature trim level a few weeks ago and had a chance to get it out on a long weekend trip as well as scurry about town. It featured a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, with a Sport mode and available manual shift control.

Paddle shifters are available on most CX-9 trim levels. All versions are front-wheel drive (FWD) except for the Signature, which includes the CX-9′s available all-wheel-drive (AWD) system as standard equipment.

Depending on the type of gasoline you choose, it makes 227 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 310 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm (87 octane regular) or 250 hp at 5,000 rpm and 320 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm (93 octane premium). It’s your call, but I used premium and the results were a very fun driving experience. Look for 23 mpg combined mileage.

Let’s be clear about one thing, my idea of “fun” while driving a big SUV is not to say this is a performance-based vehicle It is not. The torque is fun and it supplies a strong sensation of power. At times the turbo four-cylinder feels empty or lacks another level of power. The 6-speed auto is exceptional and I kept the SUV in Sport mode much of the time.

The Mazda CX-9 rides smoothly and handles with an exceptionally adept response. There is nothing abrupt about how it responds to driver inputs or road conditions. That only enhances the experience.

Cabin

Inside the Mazda CX-9, you will find premium materials that are the norm for the Signature trim’s cabin. Gorgeous, supple Nappa leather pairs with genuine Santos Rosewood inlays and real aluminum accents to present an upscale feel throughout.

Instrumentation is nothing short of best in class! Having spent a lot of time in this CX-9, I can attest to the amazing visibility at night, when all of the controls are brightly lit in white, making them easy to find and use.

The cabin is roomy, especially the second row, though the third flip-up seats are predictably only suited for children. Push down the third and second rows and you have lots of space to haul or move things.

Overall, the new CX-9 is a great SUV for families who want something nicer than entry-level comfort or style. The CX-9 is a value given the level of performance and distinct style it offers.
