5 things to do in and beyond McHenry County: Magic, comedy, ice fishing and a showdown of chili and cookies

1. A Mother-Son Bash featuring flannels and dancing is set for this Friday in Huntley.

The event, which will run 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the REC Center, 12015 Mill St., will feature a live DJ, refreshments, coloring and the option to be photographed by a professional.

Both children – the recommended age is 2 to 12 – and parents are required to register. The cost is $8 a person for Huntley Park District residents and $11 for nonresidents.

2. Kevin Sarnwick, a McHenry County magician, will perform Magic for Kids at Stage Left Cafe in Woodstock starting Saturday.

This series of shows – which occur twice the first Saturday of February, March and April – is produced by the Woodstock Area Community Ministries and the net proceeds of the show benefit the group’s direct assistance program, its fee payment assistance program for Woodstock School District 200 students in need and the district’s Kindness Closet Program.

The shows are held at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. this Saturday as well as March 5 and April 2 at Stage Left Cafe, which is located next to the Woodstock Opera House at 125 W. Van Buren St.

Upon the completion of each stage performance, each child will learn how to do a magic trick.

Tickets are $5.

Adults can return to the Woodstock Opera House Saturday evening for The Daily Show Writers Comedy Tour, which will feature four of the Comedy Central show’s writers.

The performance runs 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, and tickets cost $45 for A seats and $35 for B seats.

3. The Dave Matthews Tribute Band will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. Williams St. in Crystal Lake.

The Dave Matthews Tribute Band has been performing sold-out shows around the world for almost 20 years, playing more than 1,500 dates in 46 states and eight countries, according to the theater.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for the show. Tickets start at $21 for RaueNOW members and $30 for nonmembers.

The show is recommended for audiences 12 and older. Proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is required for everyone 12 and older, and masks must be worn while in the building.

4. A catch-and-release ice fishing derby – plus a chili cook-off and cookie bake-off – will be held Sunday at Lake in the Hills’ Woods Creek Lake.

The all-ages derby will run 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check-in begins between 6 and 9 a.m. at the LaBahn Hain House, 149 Hilltop Drive. The final catch will be at 2 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded for first place ($100) and second place ($75), and prize packs will be given for the longest bass and pike. The longest crappie and bluegill, as well as the kid’s biggest fish, will be recognized with awards.

The event will take place as a traditional fishing derby in the event of no ice.

Advanced registration costs $25 for Lake in the Hills residents and $30 for nonresidents and on-site registration costs $35 for Lake in the Hills residents or $40 for non-residents.

Children 14 and younger may register for free with a paying adult.

The Chili-Off and Cookie Bake-Off will run 1 to 3 p.m. at the LaBahn Hain House. Dishes should be set up by 1:30 p.m. and tasting begins by 2 p.m.

Participants can register as a team or individual. The cost is $5 per entry, and registration can be completed at bit.ly/3KkoQ9m.

Chili-Off participants must bring one gallon of chili, serving utensils, and a slow cooker to keep their chili warm while cookie bake-off participants must bring one dozen or more cookies and serving utensils. Electricity, tables, 2-ounce bowls, plates, and spoons will be provided.

A People’s Choice Award will be given for each category.

5. If you missed out on Woodstock’s Groundhog Day festivities or are just looking for more, another option is available farther afield.

The Paramount Theater in Aurora continues its run of “Groundhog Day: The Musical” through March 13.

Based on the classic film starring Bill Murray that was filmed in Woodstock, this musical was nominated for seven Tony Awards and is billed as “uproariously funny, surprisingly touching and simply inspirational.”

The show is recommended for audiences 14 and older. Proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is mandatory for all patrons, and masks must be worn while in the building.

Tickets run $36 to $79 and can be purchased at paramountaurora.com.
