It was not immediately clear how the man died but correctional officers, first responders attempted life-saving measures

A 42-year-old Crystal Lake man was found dead Monday evening in his cell at the McHenry County Jail.

Andrew Ladd was discovered about 9:05 p.m. Monday in his single-occupancy cell while officers were performing rounds at the jail, according to a news release the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office issued Wednesday morning.

Correctional officers and first responders from the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. Ladd was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

It was not immediately clear how the man died. A preliminary cause of death has not yet been determined, according to the McHenry County Coroner’s Office, which is expected to perform an autopsy Wednesday.

Ladd had been detained at the McHenry County Jail on charges of possession of child pornography and felon in possession of a firearm since Feb. 22.

The investigation has been turned over to the McHenry County Major Investigation Assistance Team and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
