One person killed in house fire near Wonder Lake Saturday night

Firefighters were unable to enter home due to ‘heavy fire’

One person was found dead after a house was engulfed in flames near Wonder Lake Saturday night, local authorities said.

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded to the 8000 block of West Route 120 at 10:15 p.m. Saturday night on reports of a house fire, according to a news release sent out by the district.

The fire protection district crew were unable to enter the home because of “heavy fire” on both floors of the two-story, single family home, according to the release. Flames rose through the roof, making it impossible to fight the fire from within the structure.

Later, one occupant of the home was found in a search and rescue effort and was found to be deceased, according to the release.

No firefighters were injured in the fire. After the fire, the home was deemed to be a total loss, with an estimated $300,000 in damages.

In fighting the fire, the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District used the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System to request help from several other fire departments in the area.

West Route 120 was closed for a brief period of time Sunday morning between East Wonder Lake Road and Thompson Road, reopening about 9 a.m., according to an advisory sent out by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of Saturday night’s fire remains under investigation by the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
