Almost $1,000 was raised for the McHenry Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 during a special car wash event hosted by McHenry High School’s volleyball and football teams Sept. 11 to honor the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Student-athletes and their families joined the teams’ coaches to wash cars from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 for donations to the local VFW, according to a news release.

McHenry High School’s volleyball program also held a special event to honor veterans Sept. 9, during which 23 local veterans were honored, according to the release.

Veterans were invited to watch volleyball games for free, and players escorted their special veterans on the court and introduced them to the crowd. Each veteran also signed a wooden flag as a keepsake.

“It was such a special night for our players, the fans and especially the veterans,” varsity volleyball coach Hilary Agnello said in a statement.
