Crystal Lake police on Sunday arrested a Cary man accused of drunkenly crashing into a tree and injuring a passenger before leaving the scene on foot.

Richard A. Koranda, 59, is charged in connection with a single-vehicle crash that caused him and a passenger in the vehicle he was driving to sustain injuries that were not life-threatening, Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Derek Hyrkas said.

Koranda is scheduled to appear on Dec. 10 in McHenry County court on charges of aggravated driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash.

The crash happened at 8:31 p.m. Friday in the area of Wedgewood Drive and Plantain Court in Crystal Lake, court records show.

After crashing into a tree, Koranda walked away but was located shortly after a few blocks away, Hyrkas said in an email Wednesday.

The injured passenger remained at the site of the crash, where he was treated and taken to a local hospital, Hrykas said.

Koranda has been appointed an attorney from the McHenry County Public Defender’s Office to represent him on the charges. He remained at the McHenry County Jail Wednesday afternoon and would need to post $1,500 bail to be released.

A McHenry County Judge on Wednesday denied Koranda’s request for a bond reduction.
