Second man charged in August shooting at McHenry intersection of Route 31 and Bull Valley Road

Investigators with the McHenry Police Department spent hours taking photos and gathering evidence at the intersection of Route 31 and Bull Valley Road on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021, after a report of shots fired in the area.

A 26-year-old Zion man was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted murder in connection with the August shooting that left more than 50 shell casings scattered at a McHenry intersection.

A criminal complaint was filed in McHenry County court against Deontae M. Wade on Aug. 30, the day after the shooting at the intersection of Route 31 and Bull Valley Road, but Wade wasn’t arrested until last week.

Another man – Dante L. Terrell Jr., 29, of Zion – was arrested the day of the shooting and faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, McHenry Police Department said.

“The McHenry Police Department continues to methodically pursue the other subjects involved in this incident,” the department said in a statement, noting that no other information would be released Wednesday as the case remains an active investigation.

Wade was arrested following a traffic stop by the Lakemoor Police Department about 11:30 p.m. Friday near Route 120 and Darrell Road, according to the McHenry Police Department’s news release.

The driver of a red 2012 Chevrolet, who McHenry police identified as Wade, allegedly provided the Lakemoor officer with false information about his identity and then tried to flee on foot, according to the release.

Wade was charged with obstruction of justice and identification, resisting arrest and other traffic offenses in Lake County following the incident. Those charges were dismissed Tuesday, court records show.

Wade was transferred to the McHenry County Jail Tuesday evening, the jail log shows.

Prosecutors have alleged the incident occurred when Terrell, in a red Jeep Compass, was driving away from a football game at Prairie Ridge High School, when another vehicle, a Nissan Maxima, approached the intersection.

Terrell is accused of shooting at a passenger in the Nissan, according to the indictment filed against him in McHenry County. The criminal complaint alleges he fired a 9 mm pistol with the intent of killing two men, according to a criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court.

Wade is accused of trying to kill the driver and passenger of the Jeep Compass, according to the indictment filed against him.

Investigators with the McHenry Police Department spent hours taking photos and gathering evidence at the intersection of Illinois Route 31 and Bull Valley Road on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021 after a report of shots fired in the area around 1:25 p.m.

No injuries were reported following the shooting, McHenry police said in a news release. Gunfire struck a vehicle that also happened to be stopped at that intersection, but the occupant was not injured.

The McHenry Police Department closed the intersection for about three hours while collecting evidence, according to the release. More than 50 shell casings were located at the scene.

Both men face two counts of Class X attempted murder, as well as additional felony charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawful use of a weapon, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Both men are accused of possessing the firearms while on Prairie Ridge High School property earlier in the day, according to the criminal complaints.

At the time of Terrell’s arrest, school officials said they were unaware of the incident, and prosecutors have said Terrell did not show or use the weapon on school property.

The most serious charges – the Class X attempted murder – carry sentences of six to 30 years if convicted and are not probational.

Wade’s attorney, Gran McKerlie, said he has not received the evidence in the case but expects the matter to take some time. The case is expected back in court Friday.

Bond was set at $750,0000 for Wade, of which he would need to post 10% in order to be released. Bond remains at $500,000 for Terrell. Both men still were in custody as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the jail log.
