Junior college volleyball: McHenry County College places 10th at nationals

McHenry County College’s volleyball team placed 10th at the NJCAA Division II National Championships, ending their fourth national tournament appearance in six years with a 25-13, 25-22, 25-16 loss to No. 7-seeded Scottsdale (Ariz.) in the ninth-place match on Saturday morning at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Dana Devera had nine kills, nine digs and two aces for the No. 9-seeded Scots (26-12), Grace Eyrich (Cary-Grove) had seven kills and eight digs, and Hannah Baudin (Prairie Ridge) had 23 assists, three aces and nine digs.

Skyler Raygoza had six kills and Kelly Carlson (Crystal Lake South) added 15 digs to lead the defense.

MCC ended the tournament with a 2-2 record, dropping its first-round match in five sets to No. 8-seeded Kirkwood (Iowa), putting them into the consolation bracket. The Scots captured their next two matches in straight sets against No. 16-seeded Montgomery (Md.) and No. 12-seeded North Dakota State College of Science.

The Scots were making their first appearance since 2019 after last season was cut short by a positive COVID-19 test.
