Huntley’s Taylor Casey captured the 110-pound individual championship at the IHSA Evanston Township Girls Wrestling Sectional on Saturday to advance to the state meet on Feb. 25 and 26 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
Casey defeated Evanston Township’s Ariana Flores by pin in six minutes to win the title at 110 pounds. The top four individuals in each weight class qualify for the state meet.
McHenry’s Emma Garrett took third at 140 pounds and defeated Jacobs’ Victoria Ryszawa by an 8-2 decision in the third-place match.
Huntley’s Alexandra Strzelecki took third at 170 pounds, beating Cary-Grove’s Denver Gier by fall in 40 seconds in the third-place match.
Naperville Sectional: At Naperville, Burlington Central’s Victoria Macias (110 pounds) placed second to advance to the state meet. She fell to Somonauk co-op’s Shea Reisel by pin in the championship match.
Burlington’s Soraya Walikonis (120) also advanced with a fourth-place finish.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Crystal Lake South 55, North Chicago 11: At Deerfield, the Gators cruised to victory in their postseason opener in a first-round game of the Class 3A Deerfield Regional.
Kree Nunnally led all scorers with 16 points and Nicole Molgado added 14.
Marengo 44, Marian Central 40: At Marengo, Addie Johnson led Marengo with 23 points in a Class 2A Marian Central Regional first-round victory over the Hurricanes.
Abbey Miner had 13 points for Marian. Madison Kenyon had 10 points.
Alden-Hebron 30, Ashton-Franklin Center 27: At Hebron, the Giants battled to a win at home behind 17 points from Jessica Webber in their Class 1A Indian Creek Regional opener. Webber made four 3-pointers.
Woodstock 44, Harvard 20: In Woodstock, Allie O’Brien poured in a game-high 18 points on six field goals and 6-of-6 shooting from the free-throw line in a Class 3A Carmel Regional first-round win for the Blue Streaks.
Keira Bogott added nine points for Woodstock and Natalie Morrow had eight.
Harvard was led by Nicole Garcia with eight points and Julia Chupich with seven.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Grayslake North 59, Woodstock 47: At Grayslake, the Blue Streaks lost in their nonconference game to the Knights. Spencer Cullum led the Streaks with 12 points and Caden Ogle added 11.
Wauconda 79, Woodstock North 54: At Woodstock, the Thunder fell short at home in nonconference action. Rex White and Javy Rodriguez each had nine points in the loss.
Dundee-Crown 43, Conant 37: At Carpentersville, the Chargers nailed down a nonconference win at home.
Jason Huber led the way with 13 points in the victory, while Zach Ryza, Kennon Cook and Hunter Guyon had nine apiece.
Hampshire 45, Geneva 42: At Geneva, the Whip-Purs earned the win behind 18 points from Adam Ugochukwu.
Joey Costabile had 11 points in the victory.
GIRLS BOWLING
Belvidere Sectional: At Belvidere, Richmond-Burton sophomore Gina Scichowski rolled a 1,231 series to grab one of the five spots for individuals not on advancing teams to to qualify for next weekend’s state meet at the Cherry Bowl in Rockford.
Scichowski, who placed ninth overall, was the only local bowler to move on in the state series. She had an average single-game score of 205.17, including a high of 226 in Game 1.
Marengo (4,867) took seventh, Woodstock (4,679) was ninth, Huntley (4,635) came in 10th and McHenry (4,164) was 12th.
Harlem won the sectional title with 6,013. Freeport was second at 5,730 and Hononegah (5,552) was third.
