High school sports roundup for Saturday, Oct. 23

Prairie Ridge’s Will Gelon held off Cary-Grove’s Ian Barnes by four seconds Saturday to win the Class 2A Woodstock Boys Cross Country Regional individual title at Emricson Park.

Gelon finished in 15:46.8 to lead the Wolves, who finished fourth in the team standings with 81 points.

Belvidere North won the team title with 42 points followed by Crystal Lake Central (75), Woodstock (79), Prairie Ridge, Cary-Grove (101) and Boylan Catholic. The top six teams and five runners not on advancing teams, moved on to next weekend’s Woodstock North Sectional.

Prairie Ridge placed five runners in the top 25. Ian Mahon was 17th followed by Gerrit Dam (19th), Daniel Cardenas (21st) and Eddy Klimkowski (23rd).

Crystal Lake Central’s Daniel Hamill and Karson Hollander were seventh and eighth, respectively. Will Foster was 16th, Jackson Hopkins was 20th and Nate Peyer was 24th.

Woodstock’s Ishan Patel finished fourth (16:20.1). Alex Wickersheim and Aryan Patel were 12th and 13th, respectively. Cohen Shutt took 18th, and Thomas Sieck was 32nd.

Cary-Grove’s James Grant took 11th. Ethan Waddell was 25th, Anthony Zamudio was 28th, and Dominic Garrard took 35th.

Harvard’s Steven Austin took 22nd overall to advance as an individual.

Class 2A Burlington Central Regional: Burlington Central’s Yusuf Baig claimed a regional individual title at Plato Township Park in Elgin on Saturday.

Baig’s 14 minute, 52 second time was 13 seconds faster than the runner up, Sterling’s Dale Johnson.

The Rockets also advanced to sectionals as a team with a fourth place finish. Their 71 points put them behind Sycamore (31), Chicago Northside Prep (63) and Sterling (69).

Class 3A Harlem Regional: Hampshire backed up its first Fox Valley Conference title the week before with a regional championship with 60 points, four ahead of DeKalb and nine ahead of Huntley in a tight team race. Hampshire and Huntley will run in the Lake Park Sectional next week.

The Whip-Purs were led by Aidan Gonzalez (seventh), Owen Cuplin (10th) and Henry Nangle (11th).

Huntley was led by Tommy Nitz was fourth and Chase Porsche was ninth.

Class 3A Schaumburg Regional: Jacobs finished fourth with 126 points to advance to the Hoffman Estates Sectional next week. Aidan DeMuth and Mitch Ruffin took 17th and 18th for the Golden Eagles.

Dundee-Crown’s Tyler Toms was 42nd and qualified as an individual.

Class 3A Libertyville Regional: McHenry did not qualify for the Hoffman Estates Sectional as a team, but three Warriors advanced individually. Doug Martin (22nd), Nick Schmitz (29th) and Enrique Robles (30th) finished in the top five individuals not on qualifying teams.

Class 1A Winnebago Regional: Marengo took third in the team standings with 115 points to qualify for the Oregon Sectional next week.

Marian Central’s Anthony Carney finished 10th and Johnsburg’s Jackson Batt was 12th to both qualify as individuals.

Marengo was led by Patrick Signore and Marcus Ray in 15th and 16th.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Class 2A Woodstock Regional: Crystal Lake South’s Bella Gonzalez and Abby Machesky finished second and third, respectively, to lead the Gators to the regional championship.

South turned in a team score of 36 to win the title. Crystal Lake Central (57), Prairie Ridge (97) Boylan Catholic (104), Cary-Grove (127) and Wauconda (145) also advanced as a team.

Crystal Lake Central freshman Hadley Ferrero won the individual title in 18:00.2. South’s Gonzalez finished in 18:22.2.

South’s Addie Frisch came in seventh, Gianna Pinta was ninth, and Colette Bacidore was 15th.

Central’s Annie Ferrero placed sixth, Brynn Matthaei was 13th, Addison Bechler was 18th and Emma Macke was 19th.

Jocelyn Onstot paced C-G with a fourth-place finish. Juliana Ferrara (22nd), Kate Aniolkowski (29th), Ada Saletnik (33rd) and Zoe Hubka (39rd) rounded out the scoring for the Trojans.

Prairie Ridge’s Olivia McPherson and Bridget Jewell finished 10th and 11th, respectively. Sophie Robinson came in 21st, Lydia Jensen was 25th and Nella Robinson was 30th.

Woodstock Maggie Adams finished 20th and Woodstock North’s Hannah Pittman took 32nd to advance as individuals.

Class 2A Burlington Central Regional: Burlington Central compiled 73 points to finish third as a team. Dixon won the team title with 53 points.

Eli Kruse paced the Rockets with a ninth-place finish. Abby Burke took 11th followed by Teagan Cathcart (13th), Corryn Kester (15th) and Olivia Sutton (25th).

Class 3A Harlem Regional: Huntley’s Breanna Burak was first, Molly Allen was third and Brittney Burak was fourth to lead the Red Raiders to the team title with 28 points.

Ava Allison was eighth for the Raiders, who will run at the Lake Park Sectional next week.

Hampshire finished fifth as a team with 137 points to also qualify for the sectional. Cortney Kriens led the Whips in 18th place.

Class 3A Schaumburg Regional: Jacobs took third place with 69 points to qualify for the Hoffman Estates Sectional next week. Kelly Carpenter led the Golden Eagles with a fifth-place finish, Bailey Schwartz was 11th and Elisabeth Kania was 13th.

Class 3A Libertyville Regional: McHenry grabbed the final team qualifying spot, taking sixth place with 125 points to advance to next week’s Hoffman Estates Sectional.

The Warriors’ Danielle Jensen took fifth place and Alyssa Moore was 14th. It is the first time since 2016 the Warriors made the sectional as a team.

Class 1A Winnebago Regional: Johnsburg (150) took fourth place and Richmond-Burton (167) was sixth to advance as teams to next week’s Oregon Sectional.

Ava Jablonski led Johnsburg by taking ninth place. Alexia Spatz led R-B in 10th place.

GIRLS TENNIS

Class 1A State Finals: Richmond-Burton’s Savannah Webb made the most of the final day of the state finals on Saturday, picking up two consolation bracket victories to secure a fifth-place finish in Class 1A.

Webb defeated Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Agnes Cross 6-1, 6-4 in the consolation semifinals and then defeated Grayslake Central’s Karishma Bhalla 6-1, 6-3 in the consolation championship match.
