Matt Smolzer pitched six innings of two-run ball and helped his own cause with a solo homer, leading Jacobs to a 7-2 win over visiting Cary-Grove in Fox Valley Conference baseball action on Thursday.
Grant Helbig also hit a solo home run for the Golden Eagles, who got 2-for-4 efforts from Joe Fiorenza (RBI) and Keegan Connors. Tyler Jacobsen had a double and two RBIs, and Anthony Edge also doubled in the win.
Matt Smolzer struck out seven, walked two and allowed four hits.
Cary-Grove’s Ryan Weaver was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Toby Splitt also doubled for the Trojans.
Hampshire 11, Huntley 7: At Hampshire, Matthew Karbowski doubled twice and knocked in a run, Evan Spenk had a double and four RBIs, and the Whip-Purs won in FVC action.
Spenk and Austin Leonard (RBI) also had two-hit games for Hampshire. Dominick Kooistra and Dylan Petrey had doubles as well.
Burlington Central 6, Prairie Ridge 1 (susp.): At Crystal Lake, the FVC game was suspended because of lightning in the middle of the sixth inning.
The game will resume Friday at Burlington.
SOFTBALL
Burlington Central 9, Hampshire 5: At Burlington, the Rockets won the FVC game.
Hampshire was led offensively by Abigail Lentz (2 for 4, triple), Bridget Haefling (2 for 4), Carissa Schuman (double, two RBIs), and Elyse Garcia (1 for 3, two RBIs).
Huntley 9, Crystal Lake Central 0 (susp.): At Crystal Lake, the FVC game was suspended because of lightning in the bottom of the sixth with two out.
Huntley senior Briana Bower notched career strikeouts 600 and 601, yielding only three hits in 5 2/3 innings. Reese Hunkins was 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored for the Red Raiders. Katie Mitchell scored twice as well.
For Central, Gianna Carone had two hits.
The game will be completed May 20.

The game will resume at Prairie Ridge at a later date.
Cary-Grove 5, McHenry 5 (susp.): At McHenry, the FVC game was suspended because of lightning after six innings.
Kyra Lard had a triple and two RBIs for McHenry.
Cary-Grove’s Rebecca Weaver was 3 for 4, Katelyn O’Malley was 2 for 3 with a double, and Allison Garski was 2 for 4 with a triple.
GIRLS SOCCER
Prairie Ridge 4, McHenry 0: At McHenry, Alexis Celentano scored twice for the Wolves in the FVC match.
Rosie Rojewski added a goal and an assist, and Sam Gablenz also scored. Ellie King, Chelsea Gale and Lucy Klimkowski contributed assists. Brittany Shabino made four saves in earning the clean sheet.
Huntley 5, Crystal Lake South 1: At Crystal Lake, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead just six minutes into the FVC match on goals by Morgan Alpert and Grace Helzer.
Annabel Johnson put Huntley (1-3, 1-3) up, 3-0, by halftime. Ashley Donselaar and Hanna Helzer scored in the second half. Johnson and Donselaar had assists.
Claudia Kaczmarczyk scored for Crystal Lake South.
BOYS TENNIS
Huntley 6, Prairie Ridge 1: At Huntley, the Red Raiders (7-5, 2-1) swept singles in the FVC dual meet, receiving straight-sets wins from Saarav Desai (No. 1), Matt Grubbs (No. 2) and Stan Kurtek (No. 3).
Cary-Grove 7, Hampshire 0: At Hampshire, the Trojans improved to 10-0-1 and 3-0 in the FVC, winning three singles matches and four doubles matches.
WRESTLING
Woodstock North 52, Woodstock 30: At Woodstock, the host Thunder pulled out the Kishwaukee River Conference win.
The visiting Blue Streaks had wins by pin from Caleb Sciame (138) and Gavin Loiselle (285).
Harvard 33, Richmond-Burton 30: At Richmond, the Hornets earned the KRC win.
Marian Central wins twice: At Woodstock, the Hurricanes opened the season with wins over Grayslake Central, 71-12, and North Chicago, 81-0.
BOYS LACROSSE
Jacobs 14, Schaumburg 3: At Algonquin, Luke Bertone and Justin Gretz each scored five goals for the Golden Eagles.
Brady Mollsen added three goals for Jacobs (2-2), and Ayden Janchev also scored. Janchev and Justin Gretz each had three assists, Colin Gretz had two, and Bertone and Mollsen tallied one each.
