Roundup: Putnam County baseball sweeps doubleheader

The Putnam County baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader in its home opener Saturday in Granville.

The Panthers defeated Delavan 11-8 and 5-1.

In the opener, Austin Mattingly went 2-for-4 with a double, four runs and an RBI, Andrew Pyszka was 2-for-4 with a triple and four runs and Kyle Gorisek drove in three runs.

Drake Smith earned the win on the mound as he pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out six batters with one walk.

Gorisek had PC’s only two hits in then second game, while Mattingly drew two walks and scored a pair of runs for the Panthers (2-1).

Jackson McDonald was the winning pitcher as he gave up two hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four scoreless innings.

Henry-Senachwine 9, Serena 5

Jon Downey used his arm and his bat to lead the Mallards to a victory in a non-conference game Saturday in Serena.

Downey allowed two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings pitched. He also went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run.

Troy Westerdahl was 2-for-3 with five stolen bases and a pair of runs scored for Henry (2-0), which stole 13 bases as a team.

VOLLEYBALL

At Pekin

Kenzie DeFosse had 32 points, 31 digs and 12 kills Saturday as La Salle-Peru went 1-2 at the Pekin Quad.

The Cavaliers beat Pekin (25-11, 25-22) and lost to Pontiac (25-22, 25-23) and Normal Community (25-20, 25-16).

Avery Urbanski had 25 digs, 22 assists and 21 points for L-P (9-9), while Jaidynne Lash added 30 digs and 16 points.
