A neighbor was instrumental in helping a Marseilles resident and their pet escape a house fire Saturday on the 700 block of Young Street.

The fire was discovered on the front porch of the home some time before 4:30 p.m. The neighbor went to the back of the house and alerted the resident, then assisted them. Another neighbor started spraying down the porch with water, said Marseilles Fire Chief Dave Parrot.

Marseilles firefighters arrived, received assistance from local departments, and remained on scene for about an hour and 30 minutes. The fire damaged the front porch of the home and the attic. There were no injuries reported.
