Three llamas — Sailor Jerry, Captain Morgan and Jack Daniels — escaped their pen Sunday in Wenona while their owners were out to lunch and headed north.
And they are still on the loose.
Much like their namesakes, they traveled toward Lostant’s tavern Dave’s Lost Ant before heading south along a back road to graze.
Llama owner and Wenona resident Chris Scheuer said she’s relieved to know where they actually are instead of spending their time on a wild llama chase.
“We’ve been driving up and down the fields on our ATVs looking everywhere for these llamas and we can find them, we just can’t catch them,” Scheuer said. “They’re a mile outside of Wenona on the back roads and they just seem to be grazing.”
Scheuer said they adopted the llamas from someone in El Paso who was moving and couldn’t take them along, so the animals are still getting used to their new home.
The animals aren’t quite ready to acknowledge Scheuer as their new caretaker and she said they must’ve somehow undone their latch on the fence.
Scheuer also has donkeys that are people friendly and she said they’re working with the llamas to get them to be the same way.
“We don’t take them out yet because we’ve only had them for a couple of months,” Scheuer said. “We haven’t had them long enough for them to really recognize us as their home.”
Scheuer asks anyone driving through the area around Wenona and Lostant be careful not to hit the llamas.
