Ottawa terminates agreement with Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Alliance

OTTAWA — The Ottawa City Council voted Tuesday night to terminate their agreement with the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Alliance, who was slated to operate Ottawa Uncorked again next year.

Mayor Dan Aussem said the city didn’t see the need to continue the agreement after last year’s event had some shortcomings. The City Council had until November to decide whether it wanted to cancel the agreement.

“A lot of the problem was just coordination and communication,” Aussem said. “Who was in charge? Then there were some issues with wine vendors that wanted to participate but they weren’t allowed because they weren’t a member.”

Aussem said the hope is that local groups such as Tangled Roots and Floret Events can team up to host next year’s event and keep it local.

Ottawa does not run these large events anymore, Aussem said, but the city encourages local organizations to take part.

“We didn’t feel that the event went off as smoothly as it could have and we have local people interested in working with us to do next year’s,” Aussem said.
