At the Seneca Class 1A Boys Wrestling Regional held Saturday in the Land of the Irish, the hosts placed fourth as a team with 102 points and sent six competitors onto next weekend’s Coal City Sectional.
Both Tommy Milton (113 pounds) and Owen Feiner (145) scored runner-up finishes for Seneca. Milton dropped a close 2-0 decision to Coal City’s John Housman in the championship match. Feiner was topped in a 10-6 decision for the title by Reed-Custer’s Landon Markle.
Kyler Hahn (106), Jaden Casey (120), Robby Nelson (132) and Chris Peura (195) all won third-place bouts to earn trips to sectionals.
Nick Grant (126), Asher Hamby (152) and Alex Bogner (220) narrowly missed out on advancing with fourth-place finishes but will be alternates to sectionals.
Marquette also was in the Seneca Regional but did not have any wrestlers advance or place.
Girls bowling
L-P team, Ottawa’s Pool and Lewis advance: At the Minooka Regional held at Channahon Lanes, La Salle-Peru placed fourth to advance as a team to its own sectional next Saturday at Illinois Valley Super Bowl, while a pair of Ottawa bowlers, seniors Laura Pool and Mckenzie Lewis, advanced as individuals.
Pool bowled a 1,025 six-game series and Lewis a 969, both finishing among the top-10 individuals not on qualifying teams.
L-P was led by Isabella Weber’s 1,194 series.
Girls basketball
Amboy 43, Newark 38: On Saturday, the Norsemen (16-8) dropped the nonconference meeting with the Clippers despite 10 points from KJ Friestad and nine points and four steals from Emily DiClementi.
Ottawa 37, Rock Falls 35: At Rock Falls, the Pirates led by 10 heading into the final quarter and held on for the victory over their old NCIC rival. Cheyenne Joachim and Brooke Waddell scored nine points apiece to pace Ottawa. Zoe Harris added eight points.
Boys basketball
Seneca 79, Wilmington 54: In a matchup of former conference foes, the Fighting Irish were the victors, led by four players scoring in double digits.
Noah Quigley poured in 21 points, Paxton Giertz scored 20 points, Zach Pfiefer had 16, and David Bergeson finished with 20 for the Fighting Irish. Seneca is now 17-8.
Somonauk 62, Sandwich 51: In nonconference play, the Bobcats (23-5) closed out a fantastic week with another win led by 13 points from both Alex Krejci and Brendan Roberts. Payton Wyant scored 10.
Sophomore/JV boys basketball
Streator 54, Herscher 22: At Herscher, the Bullpups outscored the hosts 20-6 and 20-0 in the first two quarters before cruising to the win.
Zander McCloskey’s nine points and eight from Landon Muntz led SHS.
Sophomore/JV girls basketball
Ottawa 46, Rock Falls 12: At Rock Falls, the Corsairs’ attack was led by 11 points from Marlie Orlandi, 10 from Ella Schmitz and nine from Hailey Larsen.
Junior high boys basketball
Limestone Walters 50, Marquette 34: In the IESA State 7-1A quarterfinals, the seventh-grade Marquette Knights saw their season end with a record of 16-7. Mack Thompson scored 15 points and Cade Durdan had 11 to lead Marquette.
East Peoria Central 40, Shepherd 25: In the IESA State 7-4A quarterfinals, the seventh-grade Shepherd Rams were defeated to finish their season with a record of 20-2. Griffin Dobberstein scored nine points and Kayden Kundert had four to lead the Rams.
