Lovero wins re-election in Berwyn; incumbent clerk loses close race

Berwyn’s incumbent mayor and Democratic Citizens of Berwyn head Robert Lovero won reelection Feb. 23, defeating challenger Brendan O’Connor by 257 votes in the city’s primary election.

Lovero garnered 2,918 votes, enough to beat O’Connor, who picked up 2,661 votes, according to unofficial results provided by the Cook County Clerk’s office.

In the closest race, incumbent City Clerk Margaret Paul lost her reelection bid by 12 votes, according to unofficial results. Paul garnered 2,734 votes in her race against DCOB challenger Rafael Avila, who picked up 2,746 votes, according to unofficial results.

In the aldermanic races, the DCOB took three council seats, while independent candidates picked up three.

There are eight seats on the Berwyn City Council. The race for the Second Ward seat will be decided in the April general election when incumbent Jose Ramirez faces off against DCOB challenger James Woywood. Primary results in the Seventh Ward race were not available Feb. 24 on the county’s website.

In the First Ward, DCOB incumbent Scott Lennon easily defeated challenger Nicolette Marie Penaranda. Lennon picked up 730 votes to 280 ballots cast for Penaranda,

The race in the Third Ward was much closer as DCOB challenger Richard Leja defeated incumbent Jeanine Reardon by 19 votes, 520 to 501, according to unofficial results.

The Fourth Ward race saw DCOB incumbent Robert Fejt easily defeat Elizabeth Jimenez 417 to 238.

The Fifth Ward contest saw newcomer Robert Pabon beat DCOB candidate Ariana Macedo in a close contest. Pabon picked up 267 votes to 250 ballots cast for Macedo, according to unofficial results.

In the Sixth Ward, incumbent Alicia Ruiz beat DCOB candidate Sandra Diaz 326 to 165.

In the Eighth Ward, challenger Joseph Carmichael ousted the DCOB’s Anthony Nowak 305 to 229 votes, according to unofficial results.

The DCOB took the Berwyn Township supervisor’s race. David Avila won over Erika Corona Owens 2,640 to 2,140.
