PEOTONE – The Coal City girls volleyball team opened Illinois Central Eight play Tuesday with a 26-24, 25-18 win over Peotone.
Addyson Waliczek had five assists, four digs, an ace, a kill and a block for the Lady Coalers (4-3, 1-0), while Macaya Garner had five assists and two digs. Mia Rodriguez led Coal City with six kills and added two digs, two blocks and an ace, Gwen Wharrie had three kills and two digs, and Bella Veraveic had three blocks and a kill. Grace Norris led the team with 11 digs, while Addison Gagliardo added six.
Coal City (2-2) won the JV match, 25-18, 25-15, and the freshmen (4-0) beat Peotone, 25-13 25-20.
Newark 25-25, Hiawatha 6-13: The Lady Norse (2-1, 1-0) opened Little Ten Conference play with the win. Megan Williams had nine kills, four aces and four digs. Bre Dixon had nine assists and Lauren Ulrich had eight assists.
Gardner-South Wilmington 25-25, St. Anne 6-12: The Lady Panthers (3-1, 1-0) began River Valley Conference action with the victory. Colby Grieff led GSW with six kills, five aces and a block; Taylor Conger had four aces and a dig; Claire Hennessy had two kills and two aces; and Hanna Frescura had nine assists.
Andrew 25-27, Morris 21-25: Morris (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season in the nonconference matchup.
Boys soccer
Plainfield East 3, Minooka 1: The Indians (2-2, 0-2) got a goal from Ben Wolcott and an assist from Logan Kalafut in the Southwest Prairie Conference loss. Ethan Kimbarovsky made six saves in goal.
Girls tennis
Coal City 5, Streator 0: In singles play, Coal City’s Molly Stiles defeated Streator’s Clair Vogel, 6-3, 6-0, and Coal City’s Trinidy Barrus beat Lucy Zavada, 6-1, 6-0. In doubles action, Coal City’s Ana Flores and Abby Stiles beat Charlee Bourell and Syria Zuniga, 6-3, 6-3; the Coalers’ team of Erica Esparza and Rachel Hall beat Svetlana Michalkova and Mina James, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9; and Ava Solis and Kylie Jackson of Coal City beat Ebony Pickens and Brianna Janke, 6-4, 6-0.
Morris 5, Rochelle 0: Morris notched its first Interstate 8 Conference win of the season Monday. In singles play for Morris (2-0, 1-0), Grace Lines beat Emma Hicks 6-0, 6-0, and Libby Wright beat Madison Ost, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles action, Morris’ Liz Kenney and Gretchen Zarbock beat Melisa Young and Jordan Dicky, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1; Olivia Moore and Kayla Walker beat Josie Lundquist and Megan Thompson, 6-2, 6-2; and Keira Kjellesvik and Faith Bogard beat Ella McKinney and Ashley Knight, 6-4, 6-3. Morris lost the frosh/soph match, 3-2. Winning at singles for Morris were Julia Borgstrom and Meghan Bzdill.
Baseball
Minooka Junior High ‘B’ 14, Bolingbrook 2: Landon Currie and Luke Boersma both collected two hits for the Indians. Currie had two doubles, while Dane Vlade and William Simpson blasted a double each. Kyle Rodak tossed a complete game one-hitter with eight strikeouts.
Softball
Morris Grade School 8, Gardner-South Wilmington 1: Halie Olson got the win on the mound for Morris. She allowed five hits and one run over seven innings, striking out six. The Lady Braves racked up seven hits on the day. Brooklynn Nigro and Brooke Thorson led the charge with two hits each.
