A juvenile suspect has been charged with two counts of felony disorderly conduct in connection with a private message that was threatening to students and staff at Yorkville Middle School, according to Yorkville police.

In a statement issued Monday afternoon, Nov. 15, police said the juvenile was taken into custody and transferred to the Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles.

Police said Yorkville School District Administration 115 notified them earlier Monday of a private message that had been sent by a YMS student “which was threatening in nature to students and staff.”

Police said at the time the threat was made the student was not on the school campus.

At this time there is no known threat to students or staff, police said.

In an email to school district families, Superintendent Tim Shimp said YMS staff responded immediately after learning of the threat.

“This message thread included one middle school student making threats of violence on school grounds. We appreciate that our students told a trusted adult about the threat and the parent alerted school officials,” Shimp said.

He continued, “We know the student who made the threat. The student is not in school, and the Yorkville Police Department has assured us that there is no immediate danger to our school community. The Y115 security team is fully cooperating with the Yorkville Police Department and Kendall County State’s Attorney Office. Any threat of violence is against the law, and we will pursue disciplinary and legal action accordingly.”

Shimp extended thanks on behalf of school district to the students and parents who reported their concern.

“We also remind every student if they see something or hear something alarming, please report it to a trusted adult, school employee or the Yorkville Police Department without delay,” he said.

Shimp concluded, “The Yorkville team has no greater priority than keeping every student and staff member safe at school, every day. I am proud of how quickly and professionally our middle school team handled the situation this morning, and I want to thank the Yorkville Police Department and our community for all they do to keep our schools safe.”

YMS is located at 920 Prairie Crossing Drive on the city’s south side.
