Wrestling: Plainfield North second as Yorkville claims regional crown

PLAINFIELD – Led by four regional champions, Plainfield North took second place at the Plainfield Central Class 3A Regional on Saturday, qualifying 10 wrestlers to next week’s Granite City Sectional.

Yorkville had five first-place winners as the Foxes dominated the meet with 220 points, with Plainfield North (183 points), and Oswego (132) earning second and third, respectively.

Yorkville won its first 3A regional title in program history and snagged its first regional title since winning 2A in 2012.

Yorkville freshman Jack Ferguson (29-6) won the 113-pound division with a 13-3 major decision over Plainfield South’s Rudy Silva.

At 195 pounds, Yorkville junior Hunter Janeczko (30-3) avenged a 9-2 loss to Plainfield South’s John Pacewic from last week’s conference tournament, posting a 4-3 decision in the first-place match.

Plainfield East sophomore Nicholas Duggan (22-14) pinned Romeoville’s Ricardo Nieves to win the 138-pound division.

“I worked hard and basically I kept my stance, making sure I didn’t get out of position today,” Duggan said. “I felt pretty confident after pinning my first and second matches, which made me feel good going into finals.”

Other area regional champs included Romeoville’s Brian Farley at 106, Plainfield North’s Jacob Macatangay at 126, Plainfield North’s Brody Wyller at 145, Plainfield North’s Jared Gumila at 160, Plainfield South’s Matthew Janiak at 170, Plainfield Central’s Max Bowen at 182 and Plainfield North’s Kaden McCombs at 285.
