Oswego police are investigating a theft by deception case in which the victim was scammed out of $10,000.

In a statement, police said the victim purchased gift cards to pay an outstanding bill which was actually part of a telephone scam.

Police said they were notified of the incident at 9 a.m. Sept. 1.
